This is the case as permanent markings, gum disease and tooth decay can occur if patients eat sugary foods and do not brush their teeth properly. Inflammation of the gums and loss of supporting bone can occur if bacterial plaque is not removed regularly with good oral hygiene. These same problems can occur without Orthodontic treatment but the risk is greater when wearing braces.
It is therefore necessary to brush at least three times a day - immediately after each meal including lunch. It is also highly recommended that you see your own Dentist every 6 months for a check-up and fluoride application during Orthodontic treatment.
- Brush your teeth at least three times a day.
- Use a soft toothbrush with a small head for cleaning in and around your braces.
- When brushing, move the toothbrush backwards and forwards in small circular motions above and below the braces.
- Aim the toothbrush towards the wires and towards the gums.
